May 2009
Summer cottages are opening on this long weekend for another summer in the 1000 Islands. We are delighted to see all our summer friends at the shop again. We invite you all to drop in for a cup of tea this summer and see the changes we have made.
This Summer’s Appliqué Project
Along with gardening and soccer practice, family BBQs and weekend getaways it is hard to find time for quilting in the summer. I found another perfect summer appliqué project to carry with me. Hearts and Tulips by Margaret Docherty pays homage in part to Pennsylvania Dutch design and serves as a pattern resource for appliqué enthusiasts of all skill levels. Margaret’s original art fits 7” to 8” blocks. All of her designs may be enlarged to fit up to 12” blocks, making this book of designs very versatile. Instructions are clear and concise, allowing quilters of any experience to achieve stunning results.
We have chosen a number of blocks from the book as our summer project. We have individual block kits available for this project to work on at the cottage or the soccer field. Purchase the book and a kit or two to get started or choose your own colour palette. No machine required! Pat, Faith , Anne and I will be happy to show you our favourite appliqué technique if you need a refresher.
Quilting Tip: I brought my copy of Hearts and Tulips to a stationary supply store and had the spine replaced with a sure lock binding. The book lays flat making tracing and copying easier. I included a few page protectors at the back of the book to hold any templates I want to keep.
Knitting Kits
We carry Louet yarns and have some great knitting kits for a summer project. Louet’s Euroflax yarns have a beautiful luster and drape. Louet’s pattern subscription service is a great resource for projects big and small. Takumi knitting needles are a delight to work with.
